I have to acknowledge receipt of your despatch, and to state in reply that I have communicated with Mr. Barry, Traffic Manager of the Indian Railway, as requested.

I have interviewed Mr. Preston (General Manager) and Col. Bonham-Carter (Govt. Director (Rly)). The latter appears to be greatly gratified; he has had 20 years' experience in India, and has worked on the Railway in question. I asked him whether he thought the fees expected would not be too big a job for the Canton Kowloon Railway.

He has just been offered a post at Madras, by which he hopes to secure a permanency.
